Another story explains the form of sculpture in which the Nataraj statue is seen in one of the dance poses known as the Natya shastra pose. One of the legs of Nataraj idol is in the air and the other leg is trampling over the dwarf or demon (Apasmara or Muyalaka as in Tamil). The demon being crushed below the legs of Nataraj identifies the spiritual ignorance by a demon and the spiritual victory over it. The upper left-hand holds Agni means a fire that denotes the destruction of the Universe. The upper right-hand holds Damru that signifies the first sound of the creation of the Universe. The lower right hand is in Abhay Mudra depicting the gesture of blessing. The lower left hand is in a posture of Gajahasta coming across the chest.
The entire posture of Nataraj is enclosed within the ring of fire that denotes the creation and destruction in a life cycle. The fire is also symbolic of dangers, evils, happiness, warmth and joys of life. The smile on the face of Shiva as Nataraj depicts the calmness in Shiva along with dealing with the ups and downs of life.
