Top 20 Rules Needed To Be Followed By Hindus For Worship

Hinduism is the third largest religion in the world, having several deities to be worshipped. This religion, based on moral and cultural values, believes in one Supreme being. It is due to the diversity of cultures, geographical conditions, customs, languages, due to which there is a wide variety of gods and goddesses prevalent for worshipping. Devotees worship the Gods for obtaining happiness, success, wealth, good health, and prosperity in their lives. They are firm believers that not only their obstacles of life would be removed, but they shall attain Moksha after their death. It is a well-known fact that praying to any God with a clean heart makes your wishes come true.  



For the same certain rules have been laid down by our saints. Accordingly, worshipping God with the set standards and rules makes your prayer more powerful and productive, while non-implementation may give lesser results and satisfaction. Such 30 rules which need to be followed by Hindus to make their prayers more positive, effective and productive are given here below : 

  1. Hindu Gods should be worshipped daily, without any break in its continuity.  
  2. Aim to perform the puja twice a day, preferably, i.e. once in the morning and once in the evening.
  3. The hindu gods statues should be worshipped only after taking a bath.  
  4. The basil leaves being offered to Lord Shiva should be plucked only after taking a bath. The same can be used for five days after sprinkling water on it every day. One should not pluck Basil leaves on Sunday, 11th lunar day, 12th lunar day and Sankranti.
  5. The basil leaves being offered to Lord Shiva should not be offered directly. The same should be first put on a copper plate, and from the same, it should be offered to Lord Shiva.
  6. The Puja place at your home should only have Hindu gods idols ranging from 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 inches only. Ensure not to have bigger deities than 11 inches.
  7. Refrain from placing Standing idols of Ganeshji, Saraswati and Lakshmi at the Puja place.
  8. Placing 2 or more similar idols in the same altar is considered inauspicious. Therefore refrain from such practices.
  9. Broken or unfinished Hindu gods murti at your pooja place is an ill omen; therefore, one should make an effort to immediately remove it.
  10. Pooja Rooms are strictly made for the almighty therefore refrain from keeping any personal picture there. Also, the temple should be cleaned every day, and to remove negativity, camphor or incense sticks must be used in the room. 
  11. Direction plays a pivotal role while performing pooja. It is why One should perform puja facing towards the East or North; furthermore, refrain from facing south in any circumstances. 
  12. Refrain from sitting on the floor while performing prayers. A mat, preferably made out of woollen, should be used for this purpose.
  13. Refrain from storing the sacred Gangajal in any plastic container. Instead, a copper vessel should be used for the same purpose.
  14. While offering prayers to the almighty, one should donate a small chunk of their income. It is also known as donation (Dakshina).
  15. Once you finish off with the Poojan, Ensure to make three parikramas standing at the same place.
  16. To conclude the pooja, one should fold their hands & request almighty to accept their prayers and pardon them for any mistakes committed during the process. This is also called ‘Shama Yachana’.
  17. Durva grass is offered to Lord Ganesha only, but not on Sundays. The same should not be offered to Goddess Durga. 
  18. The divine conch should be blown only during puja time. Blowing the same during inappropriate times makes Goddess Lakshmi go away.
  19. God's offering should be chosen carefully. For example, Offering Lotus flowers to Goddess Lakshmi is considered auspicious, while Ketaki flowers should not be offered to Lord Shiva.
  20. Refrain from offering water to Peepal trees on Wednesday & Sunday.

To sum up, following a dedicated God with the right set of instructions is very crucial. The above-mentioned pointers explain the mistakes done by people in day to day life & how to avoid them & take alternate paths while performing poojas.
