Lord Ganesha is the most important God worshipped in the Hindu religion. He is the Elephant-headed God, son of Shiva and Parvati with Kartikey as his brother. He is considered to be the most auspicious of all Hindu Gods and is worshipped first at the beginning of any event. The presence of
Ganesha statue on any occasion is considered to be lucky. People worship Ganesha idol at the beginning of any activity to get divine blessings.

There is a story popular about the arrival of Lord Ganesha when Goddess Parvati rubbed off the dirt from her body before taking bath. She created a Ganesha statue from the dirt and embedded life into the statue. She then ordered Ganesha to stand outside and don’t allow anyone to enter inside until she takes bath. So, Ganesha followed the instructions immediately and went outside. At that time he saw Lord Shiva coming towards the premises where Goddess Parvati was taking bath. He instantly approached him and stopped him from entering inside as per the orders from Parvati. At this sudden interruption, Lord Shiva got angry and pointed his trident towards Ganesha which struck off his head.

After this Parvati came outside and saw his son on the ground without the head. She pleaded in front of Lord Shiva to bring his son back to life. Later, Shiva sent his Ganas to the earth and get the head of anyone whose mother is sleeping with her back towards her child. Ganas saw a baby elephant sleeping in the said position. They took the head of the baby elephant which was fixed by Shiva on the body of the son of Parvati, later popularly known as Ganesha.

Lord Ganesha is not only worshipped by Hindus but is also seen as the sacred deity in Jainism and Buddhism too. Ganesha idol is famous for luck, success, positivity and high intellectual properties which are given as a blessing to all the devotees. There is another myth popular among the devotees about his intellectual powers and becoming a god to be worshipped first.

One day Lord Shiva, on the advice of Narad Muni kept a competition between his two sons Kartikey and Ganesha to test their intelligence. They were asked to take three complete rounds (parikrama) of the entire universe and the one who wins the race will be rewarded with knowledge and wisdom.

Kartikey, with a peacock as his vehicle started the race and was confident to win it. On the other hand, Lord Ganesha was aware of the possibility of losing the race because of his weight and vehicle, the mouse. Lord Ganesha started walking around his parents Shiva and Parvati and completed the three rounds quickly. On questioning by others, Lord Ganesha gave the cleverest wit that his parents are his universe, which was accepted by everyone. In this way, Lord Ganesha won the race and was rewarded with supreme wisdom, intellect and knowledge.
